It had been about 20 years since I’d seen it live. (Sure, it’s all over Instagram). So I went back. It is worth it.
Here’s what you need to know
Plan your trip
- This is a good overview article from Time Out, NY.
- Here is a Google map I made of the area.
- Do yourself a favor and make a restaurant reservation for before or after. This place was friendly and convenient. Not fancy. But a nice experience.
When and Where
- The lights are on 11th to 13th Avenues (also known as Dyker Heights Blvd) from 83rd to 86th St in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.
- It starts the weekend after Thanksgiving. The decor usually stays up until the end of the first week of January.
- Go between dusk and 9 PM (Most of the houses turn their displays off after 9 PM but some leave theirs on later)
- You can spend about 45 min to an hour strolling up and down the various streets.
Getting there by car
- Set your GPS for 1164 Bay Ridge Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY 11228.
That is about 5 blocks away from the heart of the action. Sure you may get parking closer, but why stress? - Look for spots along that street (AKA 75th Street) or look on side streets near 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue.
- Do NOT expect to do a drive-through. It may be technically possible, but it will not be enjoyable.
Amenities
- There are no bathrooms.
- There are people selling food and there are food trucks.
